The three nights we were there, food was the first and last thing on Boone's mind.

For those who have not been to Tioman, the main centre is the village, Kg Tekek. It is also where the airport, schools, clinic and the well-known Berjaya Tioman Beach Resort are located. You don't have to worry about food when you are at Tekek. There are plenty of food stalls along the main road, including the Ikan Bakar stall near Barbura Resort.

The last night we were there, we had Ikan Bakar with our client. We ordered a huge Kerapu, a smaller white snapper, stingray (cowtail?), sotong, telur dadar and sayur masak ikan masin. What caught my attention was the stingray. It was rather small in size.

Was it a juvenile stingray? Or is it that its species is naturally smaller in size as compared to other species?

I was concern because just a day before, I saw a juvenile shark (probably more than one) in an ice box on a wooden fishing boat docked on Sg Tekek. Its fin was still visible, but I believe not for long. The trade of shark fins is lucrative, thanks to the Chinese for being a big fan of shark fin soup. Just three weeks ago, I saw a number of juvenile sharks (without their fins) in a morning market at Brickfields, KL (my hometown!). This is worse than losing the adults (maybe there are not many adults left too). Fewer juveniles, especially of large fish and marine mammals, in the oceans also mean that there will be fewer adults in the next couple of years/decades. This will ultimately disrupt the natural balance of the web of life in our world's oceans.

The next time you visit an Ikan Bakar stall or a seafood restaurant, check out what they have. You'll be surprised.

colourfulswifthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15308557515744543625noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5822165472659662096.post-25513776519355604012010-04-20T17:36:00.042+08:002010-04-21T09:52:35.548+08:00REPORTING DUBIOUS RESTAURANTS IN 4 SIMPLE STEPS

The next time you find yourself in a restaurant/shack in some shanty town like USJ or Kluang or wherever that you suspect serves wild meat, remember to practice these 4 simple steps:

STEP 1

Ask what’s on the menu. (dressed in FBI tshirt and army pants :) ), dylan came together with donovan, zaime was standing at the entrance welcoming the rest of the late comers... and of course boone, shan min, K and me came together at quarter past four. we were all getting excited to kick off the trekking into the nature park.. ohhh lee, jason and mel (yen's friend) was somewhere in the information centre checking out the centre. yen and ben also came and join in with the rest of the gang later. our tour guide came and ushered us into the first meeting point. laila, the tour guide was a petite and sweet girl started with handing out some binoculars and giving some background on the nature park. kuala selangor nature park is mostly secondary forest, with 3 layers of mangroves spreading until the coastline. there are 2 species of primates which are the long tailed maccaque and the silver leaf monkey.

<img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5073576913882912066" style="FLOAT: right; My name was spelled out clearly on the card held by the guy from the J&W car rental at arrival hall, Kota Bharu airport. We have arrived!!!!

“Broom.. broom”.. the car started… Boone was stepping on the accelerator pedal but the car didn’t move…???? The gravy (curry) also not bad. As usual, Boone can’t control himself and ordered another roti canai.. so much for his dieting..haha. The teh O was very sweet, should have followed Shikin who ordered “teh O kosong” ..

The weather was extremely HOT when we reached the jetty. Shikin and I took out our caps and applied sun block… Boone took out his cool shades from New York. We met our clients and then boarded our speedboat…luckily it was shaded… not bad. “ Ok guys, ready to go” shouted one of the client.. Yeah!!!! Pulau Perhentian here we come!!!!

The speedboat carried 12 people instead of the designated 10. One fat guy was ordered to sit in the middle to balance the boat. Ok, here the boat speed…. Hiya…. The wind was strong and almost blew away our cap.. so we decided to take off our caps. “Wow…..wow…” Shikin and I screamed whenever the boat hit the wave crest and went “up and down”… Both of us were lifted up from the seat…. Coral View Island Resort around 2.30pm… we were so exhausted and thirsty. Quickly grab the welcoming drink – orange juice… glug glug..can I have another one???

Seafood tom yam, mixed vegetable, telur dadar and ikan tiga rasa.. yummmmy…… That was our lunch!!!!!!!!!!!!,.. as usual.. ladies first ya..sorry guys.. “wow.” The fish and tom yam very spicy… but nice..hehe.. Boone was busying wipe away his sweat.... as usual… can’t understand him….

After lunch, its time to check in to our rooms… oh my goodness… so high up…another round of climbing… our room is “ Hill Top View”.. ya right, I think better call it “ Roof Top View”… Boone’s room was in front of mine, and Shikin’s is next to mine…The room is very simple equipped with a bed, make up table.. and of course a toilet.. Surprisingly, NO TV! Without any further delay, quickly I washed my face and went to Kg. Pasir Hantu with Shikin to do the social survey….

We decided to treat ourselves to ice-cream.. it “only” cost RM 3 here instead of RM 5 at our hotel. … Sorry Boone, we know that you were doing Tekek or Pos Betau report there, we thought that want to “ta pao” for you, but I guess not…. Hehe..

Went back to the hotel around 6pm, saw Boone doing his report at the café… I quickly changed to my swim suit (left my “sexy bikini” back home) and rented a snorkeling set..… Practice breathing in and out using mouth instead of nose… ok… got it! Confidentially jumped into the sea, “oh..oh”… is very hard to breath in the sea using mouth compared to practice just now!!!…

As I continue to get used to the breathing, I swam hard to go to join the group of people including the client…. “Turtle… Turtle…” shouted one guy floating in the sea… I was so excited and quickly swam as fast as I can with my “short” legs can carry me. Al-Amin (the client) was ever so helpful in the water, grabbed me by the life jacket and pulled me along in the water as I’m too slow to get moving. There was a big turtle under the sea.. so nice.... saw a real turtle for first time in my life … (not counting the captured turtle during the Bali trip).. hehe.. After spending 1 hr snorkeling, it was time to get out from there… as I started to feel dizzy and vomiting after bobbing up and down in the sea.. hehe)… so hungry…

It's me again....."Sexy Bikini"

At night, we were taking the dinner at the beach while looking at the moon…. Yup, they, or rather, Shikin and I, turned 40. What's in an age anyway? Well, for starters, your colleagues go through the extra effort to make the passing of this milestone a little more memorable than usual.

My dear friends (especially those born before 1967) wasted no time in pointing out that mid-life crisis loomed, with suggestions pouring in about getting a flashy sports car, extra-marital affairs and so on. Since I can’t afford a flashy sports car and I'm still single, I figured I’m safe for now. I can always add some colour to my hair, I guess. There are of course some targets that I had wished to achieve when this milestone came by, and some on the list has been checked off, while a few others remained unchecked. That’s in no way a major disappointment of course. Life goes on, and I'm perhaps more determined than ever to fulfill certain ambitions in life.

My 40th birthday started with the news that Chelsea beat us in the 1st leg of the Champions League semi final 1-0. Dreary. I had an EMP to rush out on that day, so the 8 hours in the office on 26 April was pretty much a blur. Any reflections on mid-life crisis just had to wait.

Then came dinner time. The celebratory meal took place at Marche's, where the sweet smell of sausages and rösti was more than enough set up the mood of the night.

Look at the size of that Weiner!

The table groaned under the weight of sautéed mushrooms, mushroom soup, salad, more sausages and rösti as the crazy gang attacked the food pretty much with the same enthusiasm as I did. Ice cream, pudding and cake capped a fine dinner, as everyone recklessly piled on the calories.

Sauteed mushrooms were the order of the night...

Mr. President appears to have overeaten

Nothing like a satisfying meal, not even scraps remained

Celebrations did not end there of course. A surprise lunch at Chili’s was in store for her, and it would have worked too, if someone had remembered that Chili’s is closed for business on Mondays. That fiasco resulted in Mr. President running around the block with the birthday cake, in what would be a futile attempt to conceal it from the birthday girl.

We eventually salvaged (Part 1)Deep Heat. That's the gooey stuff most of us were rubbing onto our legs in the break of dawn on Sunday 18 March. It's the morning of the KL International Marathon where some fanatical (and some possibly reluctant) ERE staff and friends have gathered to run the 10km race through the streets of Kuala Lumpur.

(L to R) Dat's me, Ann, Reggie, "Dr. Bala", Dylan, Samantha, Saw Hong, Shan Min and Raymond

At the starting line, everyone was in good spirits….there was Dylan, Reggie, Shan Min, Zai, Sam, Raymond, Saw Hong, Ann, Jason a.k.a.“Dr. Bala” and me. We cheered as a Kenyan jogged across the finish line to win the marathon, closely followed another Kenyan, and another Kenyan. After a white man (presumably NOT from Kenya) crossed the line following yet another Kenyan, the bang of the starter’s pistol signaled the start of our race. We were OFF!!!

I looked around, the gang was getting going. Zai’s already gone! Probably in the sea of serious runners swarming the road leading to Dayabumi several hundred metres ahead. We swarmed past the railway station and up the slope to Jalan Mahameru leading to the Istana…hey, someone forgot to close this road to traffic. Yeah, we had one lane exclusively to run on, but the sight of vehicles zipping by a few feet away was more than a little unnerving, not to mention buses bellowing black smoke into our faces. A couple running with matching vests (what is it with couples and matching clothes ??) pushing a pram brazenly overtakes me. There’s a kid in the pram, of course, getting his or her dose of fresh air.

Our CO intake reduced considerably as we turned towards Dewan Bahasa, and boy did we need every bit of clean air as we trundled up the steep incline we so take for granted when we drive here. Dyl’s right up infront of me looking strong, with Zai nowhere in sight. Still trodding on at a leisurely pace when we crossed Jalan Loke Yew heading towards Pudu Jail, grinning at the stalled traffic as the police kept them at bay.

By now, all sorts of people are running past me. The barefooted variety, a hippy in torn jeans and doc martins footwear, fat people and several geriatrics. Runners hooked up to mp3 players; is the race boring you? And then we were on Jalan Imbi, where the first water station turned up suddenly without warning. You know you can’t drink and drive, well apparently you can’t drink and run either. The water goes everywhere, your windpipe and out your nose, and your throat just wouldn’t swallow. So, drink station No.1 was pretty much a non-event for me.

Round the bend and it was Jalan Bukit Bintang, and leisurely run has now become a struggle in breathing. There is really a “bukit” in Bukit Bintang, no kidding here. Legs felt like lead as I took forever to pass Sg. Wang. The downhill stretch Jalan Sultan Ismail did not seem to help my cause as everything now seems uphill to me. I just kept me head down as I concentrated on negotiating this phase of the race. Looking at the road, I noticed lotsa and lotsa gobs of spit and phlegm. Ugh. There is so much spitting that I thought I was in the middle of a football match.

The scenery no longer mattered as I gasped for breath running the final stretch of the race. It didn’t help when I wiped the sweat off my face with my hand still having residue of deep heat. Now my face was burning and felt like I’ve been slapped a couple of times.

Drink station No.2 was a sight for sore eyes, and this time I stopped to make sure that some fluids actually trickled down my throat. The “second wind” never arrived and so I laboured on my first and only wind as I turned into Batu Road. The finishing line came into sight as I drew level with this butch of a woman. We stole a quick glance at each other, eyed the finishing line and made a dash for it. Screams of support from the ERE cheering section led by Fiza can be heard as I mustered my big finish.

Wheeeeee...!

A few steps into my “dash”, an official steps in front of me and told me to queue up to the finish line (WTF?!), as the butch was allowed to scamper across the finish line. This has got to be a first for a race, queuing up for the finish line. So along with other shocked participants, we showed the world how orderly and civic Malaysians can be by lining up to cross the finish line. Yea.

Ummmm... life's a queue

A grinning Zai has already collected his finisher’s medal, from his seemingly effortless morning stroll. Dylan and I picked up our race certificates, with all the gals finishing in medal positions. What a great effort! “Dr. Bala” also duly checked in and collected his certificate, a superb effort considering his 11th hour inclusion in the race.

Good morning's work..

I regained the sensation in both my legs soon after, and rejoiced with the rest of the gang. There were many Kodak moments with K and Fiza busy snapping away. What enthusiastic and great supporters they were! It may have been just a 10 km and nothing as heroic as the marathon, but every one of us can be very proud of our morning jog around Kuala Lumpur on 18 March 2007.Boonehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15316059674802160631noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5822165472659662096.post-13167013686637324902007-03-26T13:22:00.000+08:002007-05-28T19:14:12.865+08:00Peraturan TanahAlritie everybody, here are the Ground Rules for Contributors. K started to look at the runners coming into the last 100 metres for ERE staff member.. i was trying to find a good spot to snap the photos of the runners coming into the finish line.. hoping to get a good photo of them. *hint hint* unfortunately the organizer had a very funny way of making sure the participants details/number are recorded even before they cross over the finish line..

and suddenly, a familiar face came into sight.. zaime came walking leisurely to the finishing line queue as if he just woke up and run the 10 K run like a normal routine he does every weekend.. of course at that time when he saw me snapping away his photos, he just smiled and waved at me and K and he was off to collect his medal for being able to be the first 500 Men category to complete the race.

zaime was the first to cross the finishing line

there was still no sight of the other ERE gang.. i was really anxious to see who would finish the race next.. and it wasnt long before i see a familiar face in sight.. with matching red sleeveless/short running outfit..
